Starting the License Manager

User Privileges

Only a user with administrator privileges can start and configure the License Manager.

Any user with administrator privileges can also use lsrvdown to shut down the License Manager unless the License Manager was started by a user with the user name “Administrator,” in which case only “Administrator” can use lsrvdown to shut it down.

Before allowing these actions, RMS not only checks that the user has administrator privileges or is the “Administrator,” but also makes sure that the user is in the same network domain as the License Manager.

Starting the License Manager Using loadls

The License Manager installation is done using the loadls utility. This utility may be run explicitly or as part of an installer program. Once loaded, the License Manager can be configured and started from the Control Panel > Services group. Automatic or manual License Manager startup can be selected.

If automatic startup is selected, the License Manager will be automatically started whenever Windows is started. The License Manager will remain running until the License Manager is stopped using the Control Panel > Services group.

If manual startup is selected, the License Manager must be started manually by using the Control Panel > Services group.

Starting the License Manager Using the Command Prompt

Use the net start command on the command prompt. The Sentinel RMS License Manager entry will be shown if the License Manager is running.

Use the lservnt -X start command to start the License Manager.

User Privileges

You must have logged into the root on UNIX.

The same user who starts the License Manager may also configure the license server. Only the same user who started the License Manager can stop the License Manager.

However, only a user with the user name “root” can use lsrvdown to shut down the License Manager.

Before allowing these actions, RMS not only checks that the user name is the same, but also makes sure that the user is in the same network domain as the License Manager.

Starting the License Manager

The License Manager, lserv, is placed in an appropriate directory and appropriate file permissions are set. The execution permission must be set so that only authorized users may execute the License Manager.

• The License Manager must be granted read permission to the license file and any other configuration files. The License Manager must also be granted read and write permission to any license serve log files that have been enabled.
• The License Manager can be started automatically or manually.
• To start the license server automatically when UNIX is started, the command line to execute the License Manager should be added to one of the operating systems startup files.
• To start the license server manually, the command line can just be issued at any time.

If a redundant license file (by default lservrlf) is in the same directory as the License Manager, when you start the License Manager it will start up as a redundant License Manager. If an lservrlf file is not in the same directory as the License Manager, you can still start it as a redundant License Manager if you use the License Manager -rlf option and specify the name and location of the redundant license file.

When using the Sentinel RMS License Manager and other utilities, you must have administrator privileges on Windows or be logged into the root on UNIX. Also, if you are using network licensing, a supported network protocol is required on the target machine.
